Create a map of the original Federation of Planets

This project must be done by individuals.

Back in the sixties, a TV show called "Star Trek" made its debut. Perhaps you've heard of it; these days, it's sometimes known as "Star Trek: The Original Series", or "ST:TOS" for short. When the show first aired, Earth was a member of the Federation of Planets, a relatively small group of civilizations on stars close to the Sun. A detailed description of this Federation can be found in the book "The Star Trek Technical Manual:" in addition to humans from the Earth, beings from four (4) other star systems are listed as members.

You must figure out which four stars are home to these alien races; they are real stars which you can find in SIMBAD and other real-world resources. Look up the properties of these stars, and make a table which lists the distance and galactic latitude (b) and longitude (l) for each one.

Finally, use these measurements to create a map showing a "top-down" or "bird's-eye" view of the Federation in space. That is, make a map which shows the positions of these system (and the Sun!) as viewed by a spaceship hovering far above the disk of the Milky Way Galaxy. Use a coordinate system in which the positive y-axis points toward the center of the Galaxy (galactic longitude = 0 degrees), and the positive x-axis points toward galactic longitude = 90 degrees.

Be sure to label your axes, and to label each of the five stars.

Feel free to compare your map to those you can find in other resources. It is likely that more recent iterations of Star Trek have added star systems to this small initial group.

Print out your work, including all figures, on paper, and hand it in.
