Whatever may be the case, we would do well, in my opinion, to not let 
ourselves be guided, in such an important matter, by considerations on 
the degree of probability or simplicity of either hypothesis, but 
rather to look to experimentation in order to understand the state, of 
rest or of movement, in which the ether is found on the surface of the 
Earth.
