Magnetic Fields

This lecture is based on Serway, Sections 29.1 and 29.2. It covers the effect of magnetic fields on individual charged particles.

Magnetism is very similar to electricity -- in fact, they are really two manifestations of the same physical phenomenon
Magnetic poles --- north and south --- are analogous to electric charges --- positive and negative --- with the exception that one cannot isolate a single magnetic pole
Magnetic fields do not affect uncharged particles
Magnetic fields do not affect charged particles at rest, but they do alter the direction of charged particles in motion
The magnetic force on a particle of charge q moving with velocity v in a magnetic field B is given by the cross product

The SI units of magnetic field are Tesla = newton / (amp-meter)
When a charged particle enters a uniform magnetic field, its motion is continuously changed by the magnetic force; it ends up moving in a circle, with radius
```
           radius = (mass * velocity) / (charge * magnetic field)
```
