Magnetic Induction

This lecture is based on Serway, Sections 31.1 and 31.2. It covers the generation of electric potential by changing magnetic fields.

Just as a changing electric field can produce a magnetic field, a changing magnetic field can produce an electric field. We call the latter effect magnetic induction.
Magnetic induction is the basis for the commericial generation of electricity, and for all electric motors. Our modern civilization depends greatly upon magnetic induction!
Faraday's Law states that the electromotive force around some closed loop is equal to the time derivative of magnetic flux through that loop.
One may vary magnetic flux by changing
- the strength of a magnetic field
- the area of a loop
- the relative orientation of the loop and the field
