Do the following exercise by yourself, and for now do not share your answers or reasoning with anyone at your table. Clearly label any estimates that you make, e.g. "Estimate length of stride = 2 inches." Indicate clearly what you are doing. You will have 10 minutes. Please remain sitting at your table.
Spring has returned and you decide that with your powerball winnings you will take the summer off and walk the Appalachian Trail. The trail stretches from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to Katahdin, Maine. How many strides will it take to make the walk? A stride is the distance between two successive left steps.
Write your estimate in large letters on the back of this page.
