Midterm Review
- So far, you have learned about
- vectors
- kinematics under constant acceleration
- dynamics: forces and acceleration
- Do these tools allow you to solve all kinds of mechanics problems?
No!
There are several types of situation which are too complicated
for the use of forces:
- motion under (crazily) varying acceleration
- collisions
- There is another way to look at situations which sometimes makes
them much easier to understand -- using the derived quantities
- Both energy and momentum obey conservation laws,
which means that (under the proper circumstances)
one can concentrate simply on the start
and end of some complicated action, and ignore all the
stuff in the middle.
