All images © Copyrighted 2000 by Craig Zerbe Today's Lunar Phase courtesy of the US Naval Observatory: This image of half moon was taken 04/19/02. The seeing was good (7 out of 10). This mosaic is made from 64 pieces each of which is made from 7 stacked semi-frames for a total of 448 frames used in total. I reviewed about 7000 frames and selected the best for each piece. Instead of imaging at prime focus, as I usually do for mosaics, I used a "special" 1.5x barlow to increase the focal length to about 4200mm at F15 on my 11" SCT. The completed original was over 15,000,000 pixels. The image was processed in IRIS (wavelet), and Maxim DL. The final image was reduced to ¼ the original for a total of 3,810,000 pixels. The amount of additional detail is readily evident. You can look at my mosaic taken at F10 with 19 pieces 01/02/01 for a comparison. http://www.astroimaging.com/Lunarlarge.htm#Half
