Worksheet for Spectrographs

Names: __________________________________________________________________

The job of your group is to investigate the spectra emitted by four sources: flourescent lights, an incandescent light bulb, a sample of excited gas, and the Sun.

Obligatory Warning: Don't look at the Sun directly. Don't do it with your naked eye. Don't do it with the spectrographs. Any spot within 10 degrees of the Sun is fine.

Draw a picture of each spectrum in the boxes below. In the area to the right of each spectrum, classify it using the terms shown on the "two page color spread on spectroscopy" (ask me for the page number).

Flourescent lights

Incandescent bulb

Excited gas
