- Radiation is the third way to transfer heat
- Energy is carried by electromagnetic waves,
or photons: two different ways of describing
the same thing
- Radiation can travel through empty space,
but may not be absorbed when it reaches its target
- Objects with emissivity close to 1.0 are good
absorbers and emitters
- Objects with emissivity close to 0.0 are poor
absorbers and emitters
- An object with emissivity = 1.0 is a "perfect blackbody",
or "blackbody" for short
- The Stefan-Boltzmann formula describes the amount of
energy transported by radiation
