Physics 212, Extra Credit for Week #8: due Feb 17, 1998, at 7 PM

Build a musical instrument (or two).

This project may be done by teams of 1-2 individuals. The goal is to build an instrument(s) which can produce a middle C and the E above middle C.

You may choose to make a string instrument (which uses transverse standing waves) or a wind instrument (longitudinal standing waves). In either case, you must produce to within a reasonable degree of accuracy the notes

Getting to within a few Hz of the notes is good enough.

You may build a single instrument which produces more than a single note, or two instruments (one for C, one for E).

In order to receive credit for this project, you must play your instrument(s) for the instructor, who will compare their versions of C and E to the true ones.

Submit a report which contains a description of your instruments, with a clear drawing and all relevant dimensions. If you made any calculations to guide your work, add them to the report. You may also include interesting items you discovered during the course of the procedure.
