Practice converting units
To start, I'll do one example on the board.
- Josh Beckett throws a fastball at 95 mph.
What is this speed in meters per second?
Now it's your turn.
- What is the speed of light, expressed in
furlongs per fortnight?
(For those who aren't horse-racing fans,
one furlong is one-eighth of a mile).
- You are in charge of designing a new warehouse
for an electronics retailer.
It's a big building: it covers one acre
of land.
The region occasionally suffers from
heavy rainshowers, which can dump so
much rain on the flat roof of the building
that one full inch will accumulate.
In other words, the roof will have to
support 1.0 acre-inch of water.
How much mass will that water have?
