Physics 211, Homework Set #1

These problems are due Monday, Mar 15, at 5 PM. You may place your solutions in the mailbox outside my office door, or bring them into class.

The grading scheme for the homework set is as follows: three of the problems will be chosen to count for 10 points, and you may be given partial credit on them. You will receive 1 point for at least attempting each of the other questions. However, you do not know which of the questions will be chosen for detailed grading ... and therefore you should do them all.

  1. Cutnell and Johnson, Chap 1, Conceptual Question 7. In addition to plotting the sine and cosine functions, plot the tangent function.
  2. Cutnell and Johnson, Chap 1, problem 7
  3. Cutnell and Johnson, Chap 1, problem 9
  4. Cutnell and Johnson, Chap 1, problem 14
  5. Cutnell and Johnson, Chap 1, problem 24
  6. Cutnell and Johnson, Chap 1, problem 35
  7. Cutnell and Johnson, Chap 1, problem 45
  8. Cutnell and Johnson, Chap 1, problem 53

  9. Fred, a psychopathic Buffalo Bills fan, decides that there is one team in the NFL that the Bills cannot beat; therefore, he will fly over that team's stadium and drop a bomb on it.

In order to confuse any pursuers, he decides to charter a plane at a distant airport. Starting at his home near Rochester, he drives about 210 km west, 72 km at an angle of 60 degrees north of east, and then 33 km east. What city does he reach?

Boarding an airplane, he again takes an indirect course to evade the Men in Black (who are always following him around). He waits until nightfall, then takes off and flies 380 km at a bearing of 6 degrees east of south. He looks for the lights on an airport in the darkness below. What small city's airport does he find?

After circling for an hour to make sure no one is on his tail, he makes the final leg of his journey by flying 320 km at a bearing of 7 degrees south of east. What city does he reach?

You may show your knowledge of the NFL by naming the team whose stadium he now destroys, but this won't be counted for credit.
